Ch 3: The importance of character and one's body

You become self with others through community and language. You also discover self through the body. For this reason, your "actions" are embodied and shape your character. Hence, the formation of character is the fourth trait.
You develop your character through actions. Everyday actions determine your reality. As a result the more your practice the more your actions will reflect your values and Principles. For example: if your choose not to drink alcohol then you must discipline yourself to say NO when you are offered an alcoholic drink. By saying No time and time again under different circumstances reinforces your stance on alcohol. Over time, the decision to say no will be secondary and you will not be tempted or persuaded by peer pressure. Others will begin to respect your stance and treasure you for who you are. If friends refuse to acknowledge and respect your choice then they are not true friends.

“Watch your thoughts, for they become words.
Watch your words, for they become actions.
Watch your actions, for they become habits.
Watch your habits, for they become character.
Watch your character, for it becomes your destiny.”

“Excellence is not a singular act, but a habit. You are what you repeatedly do.”
Shaquille ONeal

“First we make our habits, then our habits make us.”
Charles C. Noble

“We are what we repeatedly do. Excellence, then, is not an act, but a habit.”
Aristotle

Aristotle has been put on a pedestal
a) Philosophers are among the most naive, and generally ignorant people
in our nation. They know nothing about life, and most of them become
philosophers because they are too lazy or are afraid to work.
b) It was policy in ancient Greece to banish leaders with talent and
who did successful things in Greece. This is true. The fact that
Aristotle was around so long is a testament that although he ran his mouth allot and had sex with a lot of young boys, he never actually did anything but philosophies, which is the science of doing nothing.

A person has contact with reality through conciousness. This consciousness and how well we can understant reality is in direct correlation to our knowledge base. What we know can be subdivided into three catergories, the knowledge of self, the knowledge of concepts and the knowledge of others. Self being defined as The Percieved personality boils down to who we think we are, sometimes different than what we are. Character is important in this situation because it is character that keeps us from believing we are something we arent, with strong character the base of reality becomes clearer. Knoweldge of concepts is simply knoweldge of ideas others have community and language are "concepts" and concepts help to shape ones character. Finally the knowledge of others is important and usually last to develop because it gives a gauge on how "honest" our knowledge of self is. All in all what we do based in our knowledge of concepts shapes our character and so our character helps to reveal the percieved personality of the self, and the self governs what we do in our lives. In short knowing yourself can change your destiny.

And your destiny is important right?

what character you are in life will set every event in motion before it happens, yet staying on the that path can be influenced by other characters in this grand play. Always remember... YOUR THE MAIN CHARACTER!
