Ch 3: The importance of communication and language

Your stance in life is shaped through numerous experiences. You are part of a community and that community influence who you are. As an individual we are constantly influenced by others. The teach you what is wrong or right. In most cases, what we think and justify as being right may not be right.
If we look at community, we can say that our family is one group that has an influence on your thoughts and ideas. They help shape your stance and ultimately your identity. For example, your family may be religious therefore you are more likely to be religious.
Friends also influence your thoughts and ideas. They become trusted members who can have a profound impact on your identity. For example, if your friends drink then you are more likely to drink along with them.
Media also influences your identity. Most of the time we are caught up with advertisements and a suggested way of life. You are made to feel incomplete as a human being if you do own the product. This inadequacy is reinforced when friends and others have these products and you don't. For example, you may not have cell phone while others have one. As a result, you may feel anxious and isolated because you do not own a cell phone.
Within our community, language then shapes our identity. It allows us to discuss our experiences. It is a way for us to share our collective and individual experiences. These experiences also shape our identity. They challenge our established beliefs. Words bring order to a chaotic universe. We use language to classify, analyse, theorize, and discuss our concepts and beliefs.

"There is more than a verbal tie between the words common, community, and communication.... Try the experiment of communicating, with fullness and accuracy, some experience to another, especially if it be somewhat complicated, and you will find your own attitude toward your experience changing."
John Dewey

“The way we communicate with others and with ourselves ultimately determines the quality of our lives”

For the media having an influence on our identity, i think that it not only encourages us to purchase items that we "need" but also encourages us to essentialy change who we are. The media portrays the 'ideal' image for what we should act and look like. For example, the idea that to be attractive you have to be a size 0. Images like that influence you to change your identity to try and meet an impossible standard and takes away the sense of who you are.

I would agree that the community that you live in has a big influence on who you are. However, I don't agree that the choices that you make necessarily have to be because someone else did it too. I know people that don't drink even though all of their friends do. as per the cell phone idea, I do agree. Advertisements make you feel isolated if you do not own the product that they are trying to sell.

People are self-absorbed and created language as a means of trying to establish what they want to say. We all put on a mask for so long we forget who we are behind it. I think people are a bunch of weirdo narcissist who try to convince others of their normality. Why be unique? when you can be the citizen who throws the first stone? people are what they are programed to become. Kind of like software, life is about determining if your a mac or pc.The top rated laptop is a MacBook Pro. Macs have better battery life, the highest resale value, the best tech support, almost all the software you need and are intuitive. Someone explain to me why you go to "start" on a PC to shut it down. The other main advantage, there are no MacOs X viruses released. That means you don't need anti-virus software which slows down your computer. Check the security section in Computers & Internet. Every day dozens of people ask what is the best "free" anti-virus software I can get for my PC. You won't need to be one of them. You can web browse and not worry about it. You can open your email, download files, and not worry about them. The status quo sucks

i dont agree with LeStephane at all.
People may be like software but the software is all just experiences throughout your life. We aren't programmed to be who we are by other things unless we're dumb enough to let them. I know for a fact I'm not controlled by anything or anyone. I am who I am, myself and nobody/nothing will change that.
It all depends on the person. You make yourself who you are. Whether people want to think about themselves or not. It's sad to say everybody's a narcissist that wears a mask.

while the media influcences us geatly I think we all inherited a new way of life and communication through our years at this highschool. Through relationships, friendships, or flat out the people you hate. Or in general even. I never swore before highschool I can tell you that much, but when you got a whole crowd of people swearing its hard not to join in ;D
